Working Tax Credit FAQ
Can I qualify for a free boiler grant if I get Working Tax Credit?
Yes. Working Tax Credit is one of eight qualifying benefits under the ECO4 boiler grant scheme. If you receive Working Tax Credit, you can apply for a free boiler replacement as long as you meet the other eligibility requirements.
Your property must have a non-condensing gas boiler installed before April 2005. Your home should have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E, F or G. In some cases, properties with a D rating may qualify with a small contribution.
You must not have claimed a grant boiler previously through any ECO scheme. The boiler grant is available to both homeowners and private tenants receiving Working Tax Credit.
Your property will need to achieve a two-band EPC improvement through the boiler replacement and any additional insulation measures. The New Boiler Grant team will assess this when you apply.
What is the income limit for the ECO4 scheme with Working Tax Credit?
There are no separate income limits for the boiler grant beyond the requirements to qualify for Working Tax Credit itself.
If you're already receiving Working Tax Credit, you automatically meet the income requirement for the ECO4 boiler grant. HMRC has already assessed your income when awarding you Working Tax Credit.
Working Tax Credit has its own income thresholds that vary depending on your circumstances, such as whether you have children and how many hours you work. If you qualify for Working Tax Credit, you qualify for the boiler grant from an income perspective.
The boiler grant doesn't impose additional income thresholds. Your focus should be on meeting the property requirements, such as having a non-condensing boiler and an EPC rating of E, F or G.
Can I still apply if my partner also works?
Yes. If you receive Working Tax Credit, you can apply for the boiler grant regardless of whether your partner works.
Working Tax Credit can be claimed by single people or couples. If you're claiming as a couple, HMRC has already considered both incomes when calculating your Working Tax Credit. If you're receiving the benefit, you meet the eligibility criteria.
Your partner's employment status doesn't add extra restrictions for the boiler grant. The requirement is that you're currently receiving Working Tax Credit as a household.
The person claiming the boiler grant should be the person receiving the qualifying benefit. If Working Tax Credit is paid to you, you should be the applicant. If it's paid jointly, either partner can apply.
What documents do I need to prove I receive Working Tax Credit?
You'll need to provide proof that you're currently receiving Working Tax Credit. This can be a recent tax credit award notice or statement from HMRC.
Your statement should show your name, address and confirm you're an active Working Tax Credit recipient. A letter from HMRC showing your ongoing Working Tax Credit payments will work as proof.
The document needs to be recent, typically from the last three months. Your installer will ask for this proof after your initial application is approved and before the property survey takes place.
You should also have photo identification ready, such as a passport or driving licence. The installer may need this to verify your identity when they visit your property.
Will I have to pay anything towards the cost of the boiler?
No, not in most cases. If you receive Working Tax Credit and your property has an EPC rating of E, F or G, your new boiler and installation are completely free.
You won't pay for the boiler, labour, materials or any additional insulation measures included in your whole-of-house assessment. A new A-rated boiler installation normally costs between £2,000 and £5,000, but you receive this at no cost under the ECO4 scheme.
Properties with an EPC rating of D may still qualify but could require a small contribution. The exact amount depends on your specific property and the measures needed to achieve the two-band EPC improvement.
There's no repayment required. The funding comes from energy companies as part of their government obligation, so you'll never need to pay it back.
Can I apply for insulation or heating upgrades as well?
Yes. The ECO4 scheme takes a whole-of-house approach, which means you might receive additional insulation measures alongside your new boiler.
These measures are designed to improve your property's EPC rating by at least two bands. Depending on your property's needs, you might receive loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, underfloor insulation, internal wall insulation or room-in-roof insulation.
You might also qualify for heating controls and smart controls to help you manage your heating system more efficiently. Properties with electric heating or Air Source Heat Pumps might be eligible for solar PV panels.
All these measures are included at no cost when they're needed to achieve the required EPC improvement. The installer will assess your property during the survey and explain what measures will be installed.
How long does approval take for Working Tax Credit applicants?
You'll typically hear back within 24 hours after submitting your application through the New Boiler Grant website. The team will review your details to confirm you meet the eligibility requirements.
Once your application is approved, you'll be matched with an approved local installer in your area. The installer will contact you within a few days to arrange a property survey.
During the survey, the installer will assess your current heating system, check your boiler type and age, and determine what insulation measures might be needed. You'll need to provide proof of your Working Tax Credit at this stage.
After the survey is complete and all measures are agreed, the installer will schedule your installation date. Most applicants receive their new boiler within two to four weeks of their initial application, though this depends on installer availability and demand in your area.
Are self-employed people eligible for this grant?
Yes. Self-employed people can receive Working Tax Credit and qualify for the ECO4 boiler grant.
Working Tax Credit is available to employed and self-employed workers on low incomes. If you're self-employed and receive Working Tax Credit, you meet the benefit requirement for the boiler grant.
Your employment status doesn't matter for the grant. The requirement is that you're currently receiving Working Tax Credit. Whether you work for an employer or run your own business makes no difference to your eligibility.
You'll need to provide the same proof of Working Tax Credit as employed applicants. Your tax credit award notice or statement from HMRC will confirm you're receiving the benefit.
What kind of boiler systems are installed?
You'll receive a new A-rated condensing boiler that's approximately 95% efficient. The specific brand and model depend on your property requirements and what your local installer provides.
If your current heating system runs on mains gas, you'll receive a gas condensing boiler to replace your old non-condensing model. This could be a wall-mounted combi boiler or a system boiler, depending on your home's hot water and heating needs.
If your property is currently heated by electric storage heaters, coal, oil or LPG, you might receive an Air Source Heat Pump instead of a gas boiler. Heat pumps are renewable heating systems that are more efficient than traditional heating.
All installers work with approved boiler manufacturers. Your new boiler will come with a manufacturer's warranty. The installer will explain how to use your new heating system and provide all warranty documentation.
How can I check if I qualify online?
You can check your eligibility by completing the online application form on the New Boiler Grant website. Start by entering your postcode to see if your area is covered by the scheme.
You'll be asked about your current benefits, so select Working Tax Credit when prompted. You'll also need to provide information about your property, including your current heating system and boiler type.
The form takes just a few minutes to complete. After you submit it, the New Boiler Grant team will review your details and contact you within 24 hours in most cases.
The team will verify your eligibility based on your Working Tax Credit and property information. You'll then be referred to an approved local installer who will arrange your property survey and confirm the final details.
