Income Support FAQ
Can I apply for a boiler grant if I receive Income Support?
Yes. Income Support is one of eight qualifying benefits under the ECO4 boiler grant scheme. If you receive Income Support, you can apply for a free boiler replacement as long as you meet the other eligibility requirements.
Your property must have a non-condensing gas boiler installed before April 2005. Your home should have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E, F or G. In some cases, properties with a D rating may qualify with a small contribution.
You must not have claimed a grant boiler previously through any ECO scheme. The boiler grant is available to both homeowners and private tenants receiving Income Support.
Your property will need to achieve a two-band EPC improvement through the boiler replacement and any additional insulation measures. The New Boiler Grant team will check this for you when you apply.
What proof of Income Support do I need to provide?
You'll need to provide a recent Income Support statement or award letter from the Department for Work and Pensions. This document should show your name, address and confirm you're currently receiving Income Support.
Your proof needs to be recent, typically from the last three months. The installer will ask for this after your initial application is approved and before the property survey takes place.
A letter showing your ongoing Income Support payments will work as proof. If you receive your correspondence online, you can print or show a digital copy of your statement.
You should also have photo identification ready, such as a passport or driving licence. The installer may need this to verify your identity when they visit your property for the survey.
Do I need to own my home to qualify for the ECO4 boiler grant?
No. Both homeowners and private tenants receiving Income Support can qualify for the boiler grant.
If you're a homeowner living in the property that needs a new boiler, you can apply directly. You'll need to provide proof of ownership if requested during the application process.
Private tenants can also apply, but you must get permission from your landlord before any work begins. The landlord needs to agree to the boiler replacement and any insulation measures included in your whole-of-house assessment. You'll need written confirmation from your landlord before the installer can proceed with the work.
Social housing tenants should check with their housing provider first. Your council or housing association may have separate grant schemes available specifically for social housing properties.
Does receiving other benefits affect my eligibility?
No. Receiving other benefits alongside Income Support doesn't affect your eligibility. You only need to qualify under one of the eight eligible benefits to receive the boiler grant.
Many people receiving Income Support also receive other benefits like Child Benefit, Carer's Allowance or Disability Living Allowance. These additional benefits don't impact your application positively or negatively.
You only need to provide proof of one qualifying benefit when you apply. If you receive Income Support, that's sufficient evidence of eligibility from a benefits perspective.
Your property still needs to meet the technical requirements regardless of how many benefits you receive. Your boiler must be non-condensing and installed before April 2005, and your property must have an EPC rating of E, F or G.
How much of the cost does the boiler grant cover?
The ECO4 boiler grant covers 100% of the cost when you meet all the qualifying criteria. You won't pay anything for the boiler, installation, labour or materials.
A new A-rated boiler installation normally costs between £2,000 and £5,000. Under the ECO4 scheme, you receive this completely free when your property has an EPC rating of E, F or G.
If your property requires additional insulation measures to achieve the two-band EPC improvement, these are also included at no cost. This might include loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, underfloor insulation or other measures.
Properties with an EPC rating of D may still qualify but could require a small contribution. The exact amount depends on your specific property and the measures needed. The New Boiler Grant team will explain any costs before you proceed.
There's no repayment required. The funding comes from energy companies as part of their government obligation, so you'll never need to pay it back.
What kind of boiler can I get through the Income Support grant?
You'll receive a new A-rated condensing boiler that's approximately 95% efficient. The specific brand and model depend on your property requirements and what your local installer provides.
If your current heating system runs on mains gas, you'll receive a gas condensing boiler to replace your old non-condensing model. This could be a wall-mounted combi boiler or a system boiler, depending on your home's hot water and heating needs.
If your property is currently heated by electric storage heaters, coal, oil or LPG, you might receive an Air Source Heat Pump instead of a gas boiler. Heat pumps are renewable heating systems that are more efficient than gas boilers and use less energy.
All installers work with approved boiler manufacturers. Your new boiler will come with a manufacturer's warranty. The installer will explain how to use your new heating system and provide all warranty documentation.
How long does the application process take?
You'll typically hear back within 24 hours after submitting your application through the New Boiler Grant website. The team will review your details to confirm you meet the eligibility requirements.
Once your application is approved, you'll be matched with an approved local installer in your area. The installer will contact you within a few days to arrange a property survey.
During the survey, the installer will assess your current heating system, check your boiler type and age, and determine what insulation measures might be needed. You'll need to provide proof of your Income Support at this stage.
After the survey is complete and all measures are agreed, the installer will schedule your installation date. Most applicants receive their new boiler within two to four weeks of their initial application, though this depends on installer availability and demand in your area.
Can I apply for a boiler grant on behalf of someone else?
You can help someone else with their application, but the person receiving Income Support must be the applicant. The benefit recipient needs to be living in the property that requires the new boiler.
If you're helping a family member or friend who receives Income Support, you can assist them in completing the online application form. However, they'll need to provide their own proof of Income Support and identification to the installer.
The application must be in the name of the person who receives the qualifying benefit and lives in the property. If you're a landlord and your tenant receives Income Support, the tenant would need to apply with your written permission.
Carers can help vulnerable people complete the application, but the benefit recipient must consent to the work and be present when the installer visits for the survey.
Will the new boiler reduce my energy bills?
Yes. A new A-rated condensing boiler can significantly reduce your energy bills compared to an old non-condensing boiler.
Non-condensing boilers are at best around 75% efficient, which means 25% of the energy you pay for is wasted. New A-rated condensing boilers reach approximately 95% efficiency. This represents around 20% savings on your fuel costs.
If you're currently heating your home with electric storage heaters, coal, oil or LPG and receive an Air Source Heat Pump, your savings could be even greater. Heat pumps use renewable energy and are cheaper to run than most traditional heating systems.
If you also receive free insulation measures as part of your whole-of-house assessment, you'll save additional money. Better insulation means your home retains heat longer, so your boiler doesn't need to work as hard to keep your home warm.
