Free Boiler Replacement with Pension Credit
Claim your free boiler replacement if you receive Pension Credit – Claim now!
From April 2022 you will need to ensure you receive Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit, or both.
Please double check your benefits paperwork for Pension Credit before proceeding with Government boiler grants 2025 as it may have been replaced with Universal Credit.
Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to a minimum amount if you do not have much income or savings. Follow link above for further information.
Savings Credit is a small top-up for people who have a modest amount of income or savings. It’s only available if you reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016. The amount you can get depends on whether you meet the ‘savings credit threshold.’ You must have a weekly income of at least £153.70 a week if you’re single or £244.12 a week if you’re claiming as a couple. The most you can get from Savings Credit is £14.04 a week if you’re single or £15.71 if you’re claiming as a couple.

Pensioners FAQ
Can pensioners apply for a free boiler grant?
Yes. Pensioners can apply for a free boiler grant if they receive Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit). Pension Credit is one of eight qualifying benefits under the ECO4 scheme.
Your property must have a non-condensing gas boiler installed before April 2005. Your home should have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E, F or G. In some cases, properties with a D rating may qualify with a small contribution.
You must not have claimed a grant boiler previously through any ECO scheme. The boiler grant is available to both homeowners and private tenants receiving Pension Credit.
Your property will need to achieve a two-band EPC improvement through the boiler replacement and any additional insulation measures. The New Boiler Grant team will check this for you when you apply.
What type of pension qualifies for the ECO4 scheme?
Pension Credit qualifies for the ECO4 boiler grant scheme. This includes both Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit.
State Pension on its own does not qualify. You must be receiving Pension Credit alongside your State Pension to meet the benefit requirement for the ECO4 scheme.
Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit for people over State Pension age who have a low income. If you receive Pension Credit, you automatically meet the income requirement for the boiler grant.
Private pensions, workplace pensions and other retirement income don't qualify on their own. The qualifying benefit is specifically Pension Credit from the Department for Work and Pensions.
Do I need to receive Pension Credit to get a boiler grant?
Not necessarily. Pension Credit is one of eight qualifying benefits, but you could also qualify under other benefits.
If you receive Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit or Housing Benefit, you can apply for the boiler grant.
However, Pension Credit is the most common qualifying benefit for pensioners. If you're over State Pension age and have a low income, you might be eligible for Pension Credit even if you're not currently claiming it.
You only need to receive one of the eight qualifying benefits to apply for the boiler grant. Your property must still meet the technical requirements regarding boiler age and EPC rating.
Will my savings affect my eligibility?
Your savings affect whether you qualify for Pension Credit, but they don't add extra restrictions for the boiler grant itself.
If you're receiving Pension Credit, the Department for Work and Pensions has already considered your savings when calculating your benefit. This means if you're getting Pension Credit, you've already passed the savings test.
For the boiler grant, the only requirement is that you're currently receiving Pension Credit or another qualifying benefit. The ECO4 scheme doesn't impose additional savings limits beyond those used to calculate your benefit entitlement.
If you're not currently receiving Pension Credit but think you might qualify, you can check with the Pension Service. Many pensioners don't claim Pension Credit even though they're entitled to it.
Can I apply if I live alone or with a partner?
Yes. You can apply whether you live alone or with a partner, as long as you receive Pension Credit or another qualifying benefit.
If you live alone and receive Pension Credit, you can apply for the boiler grant. You'll need to provide proof of your Pension Credit and meet the property requirements.
If you live with a partner, either of you can apply as long as one of you receives a qualifying benefit. Pension Credit is often claimed jointly by couples, so either partner can be the applicant for the boiler grant.
Your living arrangements don't affect your eligibility. The requirement is that you're receiving a qualifying benefit and living in the property that needs a new boiler.
Is there a special scheme for elderly homeowners?
The ECO4 scheme itself doesn't have a separate programme specifically for elderly people, but pensioners receiving Pension Credit qualify under the standard scheme.
The ECO4 scheme is designed to help vulnerable households and fuel-poor properties. Many of the qualifying benefits, including Pension Credit, are received by elderly homeowners on low incomes.
If you don't receive any of the eight qualifying benefits but have a low household income or health conditions affected by cold homes, you might qualify under the LA Flex scheme. This is available through your Local Authority and may have different eligibility criteria.
The standard ECO4 scheme provides the same level of support to all qualifying applicants regardless of age. Pensioners receive the same free boiler and installation as younger applicants.
How much can pensioners save through the boiler grant?
Pensioners can save between £2,000 and £5,000 on the cost of a new boiler and installation. This is the typical cost of an A-rated boiler replacement, which you receive completely free under the ECO4 scheme.
You'll also save money on your ongoing energy bills. Non-condensing boilers are at best around 75% efficient, whilst new A-rated condensing boilers reach approximately 95% efficiency. This represents around 20% savings on your fuel costs.
For a pensioner on a fixed income, these savings can make a significant difference. Lower energy bills mean more money for other essential expenses. A reliable new boiler also means fewer worries about breakdowns and emergency repairs.
If you receive free insulation measures alongside your boiler, your savings will be even greater. Better insulation helps your home retain heat, so your heating system doesn't need to work as hard.
Is installation free for retired applicants?
Yes. The installation is completely free when you meet all the qualifying criteria. You won't pay anything for the boiler, labour, materials or any work needed to fit your new heating system.
A new A-rated boiler installation normally costs between £2,000 and £5,000. Under the ECO4 scheme, you receive this at no cost when your property has an EPC rating of E, F or G.
The installation includes removing your old boiler, fitting the new A-rated condensing boiler, connecting it to your heating system, and testing everything works properly. Any necessary pipework or adjustments are also covered.
If your property requires additional insulation measures to achieve the two-band EPC improvement, these are included at no cost. There's no repayment required. You'll never need to pay the money back.
Do I need to own my home to apply?
No. Both homeowners and private tenants receiving Pension Credit can apply for the boiler grant.
If you're a pensioner who owns your home, you can apply directly. Many elderly homeowners on fixed incomes struggle to afford major home improvements, so the ECO4 scheme provides valuable support.
Private tenants can also apply, but you'll need permission from your landlord before any work begins. The landlord must agree to the boiler replacement and any insulation measures. You'll need written confirmation from your landlord before the installer can proceed.
Sheltered housing residents should check with their housing provider. Your council or housing association may have separate grant schemes available for social housing properties.
How do I apply for a pensioner boiler grant?
You can apply through our website by completing the online application form. Start by entering your postcode to check if your area is covered by the scheme.
You'll be asked about your current benefits, so select Pension Credit when prompted. You'll also need to provide information about your property, including your current heating system and boiler type.
The form takes just a few minutes to complete. If you need help with the online form, a family member or friend can assist you. After you submit it, the New Boiler Grant team will review your details and contact you within 24 hours in most cases.
You'll then be referred to an approved local installer who will arrange your property survey. Make sure you have your Pension Credit statement or award letter ready to show the installer when they visit.
