Child Tax Credit FAQ

Am I eligible for a boiler grant if I receive Child Tax Credit?

Yes. Child Tax Credit is one of eight qualifying benefits under the ECO4 boiler grant scheme. If you receive Child Tax Credit, you can apply for a free boiler replacement as long as you meet the other eligibility requirements.

Your property must have a non-condensing gas boiler installed before April 2005. Your home should have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E, F or G. In some cases, properties with a D rating may qualify with a small contribution.

You must not have claimed a grant boiler previously through any ECO scheme. The boiler grant is available to both homeowners and private tenants receiving Child Tax Credit.

Your property will need to achieve a two-band EPC improvement through the boiler replacement and any additional insulation measures. The New Boiler Grant team will assess this when you apply.

Does the number of children I have affect my eligibility?

No. The number of children you have doesn't affect your eligibility for the ECO4 boiler grant. If you receive Child Tax Credit, you meet the benefit requirement regardless of whether you have one child or several children.

Child Tax Credit itself is calculated based on the number of children you have, but the boiler grant only requires that you're an active Child Tax Credit recipient. The amount of Child Tax Credit you receive doesn't matter.

Your eligibility depends on meeting the property requirements. Your boiler must be non-condensing and installed before April 2005, and your property must have an EPC rating of E, F or G.

The size of your family might influence what type of boiler system you need. Larger families typically need more hot water, so the installer will recommend the right type of boiler for your household during the property survey.

What income level qualifies under Child Tax Credit for ECO4?

There are no separate income limits for the boiler grant beyond the requirements to qualify for Child Tax Credit itself.

If you're already receiving Child Tax Credit, you automatically meet the income requirement for the ECO4 boiler grant. HMRC has already assessed your income when awarding you Child Tax Credit.

Child Tax Credit has its own income thresholds that vary depending on your circumstances. If you qualify for Child Tax Credit, you qualify for the boiler grant from an income perspective.

The boiler grant doesn't impose additional income thresholds. Your focus should be on meeting the property requirements, such as having a non-condensing boiler and an EPC rating of E, F or G.

Can single parents apply for the free boiler grant?

Yes. Single parents receiving Child Tax Credit can apply for the free boiler grant. Your family structure doesn't affect your eligibility.

Many single parents receive Child Tax Credit to help with the costs of raising children. If you're a single parent claiming Child Tax Credit, you meet the benefit requirement for the ECO4 scheme.

You need to be either a homeowner living in the property or a private tenant with landlord permission. Your property must meet the technical requirements regarding boiler age and EPC rating.

Single parents often benefit significantly from a new efficient boiler. Lower energy bills can make a real difference to household budgets, and a reliable heating system means fewer worries about breakdowns during cold weather.

Do I need to show my tax credit statement to apply?

Yes. You'll need to provide proof that you're currently receiving Child Tax Credit. This can be a recent tax credit award notice or statement from HMRC.

Your statement should show your name, address and confirm you're an active Child Tax Credit recipient. A letter from HMRC showing your ongoing Child Tax Credit payments will work as proof.

The document needs to be recent, typically from the last three months. Your installer will ask for this proof after your initial application is approved and before the property survey takes place.

You should also have photo identification ready, such as a passport or driving licence. The installer may need this to verify your identity when they visit your property.

Will I have to pay anything for the boiler installation?

No, not in most cases. If you receive Child Tax Credit and your property has an EPC rating of E, F or G, your new boiler and installation are completely free.

You won't pay for the boiler, labour, materials or any additional insulation measures included in your whole-of-house assessment. A new A-rated boiler installation normally costs between £2,000 and £5,000, but you receive this at no cost under the ECO4 scheme.

Properties with an EPC rating of D may still qualify but could require a small contribution. The exact amount depends on your specific property and the measures needed to achieve the two-band EPC improvement.

There's no repayment required. The funding comes from energy companies as part of their government obligation, so you'll never need to pay it back.

Can I apply for other home upgrades through the ECO4 scheme?

Yes. The ECO4 scheme takes a whole-of-house approach, which means you might receive additional insulation measures alongside your new boiler.

These measures are designed to improve your property's EPC rating by at least two bands. Depending on your property's needs, you might receive loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, underfloor insulation, internal wall insulation or room-in-roof insulation.

You might also qualify for heating controls and smart controls to help you manage your heating system more efficiently. Properties with electric heating or Air Source Heat Pumps might be eligible for solar PV panels.

All these measures are included at no cost when they're needed to achieve the required EPC improvement. The installer will assess your property during the survey and explain what measures will be installed.

How quickly will I get my new boiler after applying?

Most Child Tax Credit recipients receive their new boiler within two to four weeks of submitting their application, though timelines vary depending on installer availability and demand.

After you submit your application through the New Boiler Grant website, you'll typically hear back within 24 hours. Once your eligibility is confirmed, you'll be matched with an approved local installer.

The installer will contact you to arrange a property survey. This usually happens within a few days of your application approval. During the survey, they'll assess your current heating system and confirm what work needs to be done.

Once the survey is complete and you've provided proof of your Child Tax Credit, the installer will schedule your installation date. The actual boiler installation takes one to two days, depending on your property and whether you're receiving additional insulation measures.

Are there grants for both gas and electric boilers?

The ECO4 scheme covers different heating systems depending on what you currently have installed.

If your property has a non-condensing gas boiler, you'll receive a new A-rated gas condensing boiler. This could be a combi boiler or a system boiler, depending on your household's hot water needs.

If your property is currently heated by electric storage heaters, you won't receive an electric boiler. Instead, you might qualify for an Air Source Heat Pump, which is a renewable heating system that's more efficient than electric heating.

Properties heated by coal, oil or LPG systems can also qualify for Air Source Heat Pumps. If you're receiving first-time central heating and there's a gas meter installed before 1 April 2022, you might receive a mains gas system. Otherwise, you'd receive an Air Source Heat Pump.

How do I apply for the Child Tax Credit boiler grant online?

You can apply through the New Boiler Grant website by completing the online application form. Start by entering your postcode to check if your area is covered by the scheme.

You'll be asked about your current benefits, so select Child Tax Credit when prompted. You'll also need to provide information about your property, including your current heating system and boiler type.

The form takes just a few minutes to complete. After you submit it, the New Boiler Grant team will review your details and contact you within 24 hours in most cases.

You'll then be referred to an approved local installer who will arrange your property survey. Make sure you have your Child Tax Credit award notice or statement from HMRC ready to show the installer when they visit.
