Universal Credit FAQ

Can I get a free boiler grant if I'm on Universal Credit?

Yes. Universal Credit is one of the qualifying benefits for the ECO4 boiler grant scheme. If you receive Universal Credit, you can apply for a free boiler replacement as long as you meet the other eligibility requirements.

You'll need to be living in a property with a non-condensing gas boiler installed before April 2005. Your home should have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E, F or G. In some cases, properties with a D rating may qualify with a small contribution.

The boiler grant is available to both homeowners and private tenants receiving Universal Credit. You must not have claimed a grant boiler previously through any ECO scheme.

Your property will also need to achieve a two-band EPC improvement through the boiler replacement and any additional insulation measures. The New Boiler Grant team will check this for you when you apply.

What documents do I need to prove I receive Universal Credit?

You'll need to provide proof that you're currently receiving Universal Credit. This can be a recent Universal Credit statement or award letter from the Department for Work and Pensions.

Your statement should show your name, address and confirm you're an active Universal Credit recipient. A screenshot from your Universal Credit online account showing your recent payments can also work as proof.

The document needs to be recent, typically from the last three months. Your installer will ask for this proof after your initial application is approved and before the property survey takes place.

You should also have photo identification ready, such as a passport or driving licence. The installer may need this to verify your identity when they visit your property.

Does everyone on Universal Credit qualify for the ECO4 scheme?

Not automatically. Receiving Universal Credit is one of the qualifying criteria, but your property must also meet specific technical requirements.

Your current boiler needs to be a non-condensing model installed before April 2005. This includes wall-mounted boilers, floor-standing boilers and back boilers. If you have a newer condensing boiler, you won't qualify for a replacement.

Your property's EPC rating must be E, F or G for you to receive a completely free boiler. Properties with a D rating sometimes qualify but may require a small contribution. Properties rated A, B or C are too energy efficient to qualify under the scheme.

The installation must improve your property's EPC rating by at least two bands. If a new boiler and insulation measures can't achieve this improvement, you may not qualify. The New Boiler Grant team will assess this during your application.

Do I have to be a homeowner to claim the boiler grant?

No. Both homeowners and private tenants receiving Universal Credit can claim the boiler grant.

If you're a homeowner living in the property that needs a new boiler, you can apply directly. You'll need to provide proof of ownership if requested during the application process.

Private tenants can also apply, but you must get permission from your landlord before any work begins. The landlord needs to agree to the boiler replacement and any insulation measures included in your whole-of-house assessment. You'll need written confirmation from your landlord before the installer can proceed.

Social housing tenants should check with their housing provider first, as they may have separate grant schemes available through the council or housing association.

How much will I have to pay towards my new boiler?

Nothing in most cases. If you receive Universal Credit and your property has an EPC rating of E, F or G, your new boiler and installation are completely free.

You won't pay for the boiler, labour, materials or any additional insulation measures included in your whole-of-house assessment. A new A-rated boiler installation normally costs between £2,000 and £5,000, but you receive this at no cost under the ECO4 scheme.

Properties with an EPC rating of D may still qualify but could require a small contribution. The exact amount depends on your specific property and the measures needed to achieve the two-band EPC improvement.

There's no repayment required. The funding comes from energy companies as part of their government obligation, so you'll never need to pay it back.

What type of boilers are available under the Universal Credit grant?

You'll receive a new A-rated condensing boiler that's approximately 95% efficient. The specific brand and model depend on your property requirements and what your local installer provides.

If your current heating system runs on mains gas, you'll receive a gas condensing boiler to replace your old non-condensing model. This could be a wall-mounted combi boiler or a system boiler, depending on your home's hot water and heating needs.

If your property is currently heated by electric storage heaters, coal, oil or LPG, you might receive an Air Source Heat Pump instead of a gas boiler. This is a renewable heating system that's even more efficient than a gas boiler.

All installers work with approved boiler manufacturers and provide models that meet ECO4 scheme standards. Your new boiler will come with a manufacturer's warranty for peace of mind.

Can I apply for both Universal Credit and Child Tax Credit boiler grants?

You only need to qualify under one benefit to receive the boiler grant. If you receive both Universal Credit and Child Tax Credit, you can use either benefit when you apply.

However, you can only claim one boiler grant per property. The ECO4 scheme doesn't allow multiple claims, so you can't receive additional grants by listing multiple benefits.

Some households receiving Universal Credit may also receive Child Tax Credit during the transition period. You should apply using whichever benefit you receive most reliably and can provide the clearest proof for.

Once you've received your free boiler under the ECO4 scheme, you won't be eligible to apply again for the same property, regardless of which benefits you receive.

How soon will my boiler be installed after approval?

Most Universal Credit recipients receive their new boiler within two to four weeks of submitting their application, though timelines vary depending on installer availability and demand.

After you submit your application through the New Boiler Grant website, you'll typically hear back within 24 hours. Once your eligibility is confirmed, you'll be matched with an approved local installer.

The installer will contact you to arrange a property survey. This usually happens within a few days of your application approval. During the survey, they'll assess your current heating system and confirm what work needs to be done.

Once the survey is complete and you've provided proof of your Universal Credit payments, the installer will schedule your installation date. The actual boiler fitting takes one to two days, depending on your property and whether you're receiving additional insulation measures.

What if my Universal Credit payments recently started — can I still qualify?

Yes. You can qualify even if you've only recently started receiving Universal Credit. There's no minimum time period you need to have been claiming the benefit.

You'll need to provide proof that you're currently receiving Universal Credit when your installer visits. This could be your first payment statement or award letter from the Department for Work and Pensions.

As long as you're an active Universal Credit recipient at the time of application and installation, you meet the benefit requirement. The scheme doesn't require you to have been claiming for a specific number of months.

Your Universal Credit payments must be ongoing. If your claim has ended or been suspended, you won't qualify until your payments resume.
